Abstract

This publication presents an expanded set of archival documents dedicated to the forced resettlement of citizens from the territory of the Kabardino-Balkarian ASSR to remote areas of the USSR in 1944, when the republic was also liquidated as a state entity. The forced resettlement affected ethnic communities of the North Caucasus, in particular representatives of the peoples of the former Kabardino-Balkarian ASSR. The content of events related to the beginning of rehabilitation in 1956–1957 is revealed, as well as the rehabilitation of citizens belonging to 19 peoples and representatives of 43 different nationalities. The publication contains information about the rehabilitation of peoples based on documents testifying to the lifting of the status of special settlers and the possibility of returning to their region of residence. Much of the solution to the problems that arose was facilitated by the first zonal meeting held in Nalchik on August 25, 1960, which considered issues of social and cultural rehabilitation. The subsequent fundamental legal act was the Law on the Rehabilitation of Repressed Peoples of April 26, 1991.
