Abstract

The relevance of the present study is due to the need to present the main provisions of the work by the Hungarian Orientalist Wilhelm Pröhle, "Balkarische Studien," which is dedicated to the description of the Balkar idiom, including a section on the phonetics of the Cherek dialect. Researchers of the Karachay-Balkar language often refer to this publication by W. Pröhle in their works without having a detailed understanding of its content.

The material for the study consists of the information presented in the aforementioned work concerning phonetic phenomena in the Cherek dialect of the Balkar idiom. To date, this work remains the sole scientific source in foreign linguistics on this dialect, and its material has not been translated into Russian.

The article provides the first detailed analysis in domestic linguistics of the theoretical interpretation of phonetic phenomena of the Cherek dialect, obtained from informants at the level of colloquial realization of linguistic material at the beginning of the 20th century. Special attention is paid to the general provisions of the phonetic composition of the dialect under study, important characteristics of the consonant and vowel systems in terms of oral realization features, phenomena of synharmonism, and positionally conditioned transformations of vowels and consonants.
