The development of entrepreneurship in the Kabardian (Nalchik) District in the late 19th and early 20th centuries (based on documents from the UCGA AS KBR)

  Timur A. Dzughanov

In the last third of the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Kabarda (Nalchik) District, like the entire Terek Oblast, was in the final stages of integrating into the Russian political and socioeconomic space. This process was accompanied by a complex transformation of not only many sociopolitical institutions but also the modernization of the traditional economic structure of the local population. One of the most important mechanisms for integrating into the Russian market for the peoples of Kabarda and Balkaria was the development of their own entrepreneurship, which significantly optimized this process. To study the development and evolution of entrepreneurship, a wide range of sources related to the circulation of civilian weapons in the Nalchik Okrug, including among entrepreneurs and merchants, is used for the first time. Based on these materials, the main range of entrepreneurial practices most common in the Okrug during this period and their specialization are determined. The reasons that prompted merchants to apply for permits to carry weapons are explored.
