Review of the book “G.M. Akkochkareva (Sandzhieva), Oral Folk Art of the Stavropol Turkmens: Proverbs, Sayings, Fairy Tales, Songs / Author and Compiler G.M. Akkochkareva (Sandzhieva); Foreword, Compilation, Dictionary. – Elista: Autonomous Institution of the Republic of Kalmykia “RIA ‘Kalmykia’”, 2025. – 288 p.”

The review analyzes the first comprehensive edition of the folklore heritage of the Stavropol Turkmens, a diaspora group compactly residing in the North Caucasus since the mid-19th century. The book, prepared by G. M. Akkochkarova (Sandzhieva) on the basis of long-term field research (2012–2025), presents a systematized corpus of proverbs, sayings, blessings, songs, and ritual texts in the local dialect with parallel translation into Russian and an extensive dictionary appendix. The review evaluates the author-compiler's methodological approaches, the source base, the genre diversity of the material, as well as the scholarly and practical significance of the work for Caucasian studies, folklore studies, and dialectology. Special attention is paid to the documentation of rare ritual forms (sharamazan), ethnographic descriptions of economic practices, and the role of digital technologies in contemporary fieldwork. It is concluded that the work fills a significant gap in the ethnography of the Caucasus and serves as an important tool for preserving intangible cultural heritage under conditions of linguistic assimilation.
